Vanuit Lefkada gaan we via Preveza en Filippiada richting Ioanina. We rijden even de Egnatia autosnelweg op en bij de eerstvolgende afrit gaan we richting Goritsa en Charokopi. Dan rijden we de bergen in naar Kedros, Potistika en Paleochori. Even voor Prosilio stoppen we even voor een kleine lunchpauze - we hebben een kleine pick-nick mee, onze wat vruchteloze zoektocht naar een taverne indachtig net voor we motorpech kregen, toen we vorig jaar op weg waren naar Hortó. Wat later in Mistras houden we even halt om een koffie te drinken in de kleine taverne ( waar je ook iets kan eten ). Even na drieën komen we in Kalarrytes bij hotel Petradi 1873 aan.

De Lefkada nous prenons la route par Preveza et Filippiada en direction de Ioanina. Nous empruntons jusqu'à la sortie suivante l'autoroute Egnatia puis nous partons en direction de Goritsa et Charokopi, où nous nous engageons dans les montagnes vers Kedros, Potistika et Paleochori. Peu avant Prosilio nous faisons une petite pause pique-nique - nous n'avons pas oublié notre vaine recherche d'une taverne tout juste avant de tomber en panne lorsque l'été passé nous étions en route vers Hortó. Ensuite, à Mistras nouvelle pause pour un café grec cette fois, dans la petite taverne ( où l'on sert aussi quelques repas simples ). Peu après trois heures nous arrivons à Kalarrytes,à l'hôtel Petradi 1873.

From Lefkada we go by Preveza and Filippiadago in the direction of Ioanina. We take the Egnatia motorway till the next exit and follow the road to Goritsa and Charokopi. There we turn into the mountains to Kedros, Potistika and Paleochori. Before Prosilio we make a lunch-stop - we have taken a picnic having still in memory our vain search for a taverna last year just before we had an engine breakdown on the way to Hortó. A little bit later in Mistras we have a coffee-stop in a small taverna along the road ( where they provide also some basic meals ). Just after 3pm. we arrive at Kalarrytes at hotel Petradi 1873.

Aside from Ioanina, up to 1821 two other mountainous centers flourished, Syrrako and Kalarrytes. Initially their residents were cattle breeders. In time though, they became merchants and developed at a local level but also in the greater European area and not only (Odysso, Trieste, Constantinople, Rome, Vienna, Egypt, Thessalonica). A result of these commercial activities was the cumulative inflow of revenue but also the need for education, which by 1777 led to the founding of a school. An indicator of the educational level is the reference of the French consul Pouqueville in Ioannina in 1815 that he found the Kalarryte people speaking in foreign languages and he had visited private libraries that held a variety and important books. A testament to the growth of these two villages is also the state of their population. It is characteristic that in 1820 Kalarrytes had almost 3,000 residents (2956).
The manufacture and sale of silver objects is also included in their commercial activities. The development of the silver-gold craft in these two villages reaches a high level at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. The head goldsmith of the Ali Pasha Tzimouris worked there at the time, as did Bafas, Papageorgiou, Papamosxos and others. The creations of these renowned craftsmen reach the entire Ottoman dominion while a myth is created surrounding their names.
This growth comes to a halt in the summer of 1821, when Turkish-Albanian armies plunder and destroy the two villages. Those that were saved scattered mainly to the Eptanisa and a few returned later to live in their patrimonial homes. As such a very significant hearth of the silver-gold craft was entirely destroyed and its rebirth in the years that followed was not possible in these almost deserted and economically exhausted centers. Samedi matin, après un bon et copieux petit déjeuner, nous nous décidons de faire la promenade vers Syrrako

Syrrako, vanop het wandelpad vóór we de afdaling naar de rivier in de kloof aanvatten - bij hoogtevrees of duizeligheid, begin er niet aan!

Over de rivier, diep in de kloof, ligt een brugje((26) waar we over moeten, daarna begint de klim naar Syrrako. Ongeveer de helft van de tijd genieten we van de schaduw van de vrij dichte begroeiing. We komen onderaan in het dorp aan. Naar de Plateia is het dan nog wat hogerop lopen langs de smalle straatjes. Syrrako is in tegenstelling tot Kalarrytes quasi helemaal gerenoveerd en minder uitgebreid. In de winter wonen in het dorp slechts twee mensen

Au fond de la gorge un petit pont (26) permet de traverser la rivière, puis commence la montée vers Syrrako. Environ la moitié du sentier passe par la végétation assez dense nous offrant une agréable protection contre le soleil qui est à son zénith. Nous accédons au village par le bas. Il nous faut encore monter pour atteindre la Plateia par de petites traverses. Contrairement à Kalarrytes, Syrrako est pratiquement complètement rénové et nettement moins étendu. L'hiver seuls deux des nombreux habitant de la bonne saison restent au village.

Deep in the gorge a small bridge (26) allows to cross the river, then starts the climb. Half of the time we enjoy the shadow of the dense vegetation, a welcome sun protection. We arrive in the lowest part of the village. To reach the Plateia we have to climb more. In opposition to Kalarrytes the restoration of Syrrako is completely finished; Syrrako is also less extended, more concentrated. During the winter only two people are living here.

Bij her verlaten van het kerkje, alles goed sluiten, de pin in het oog aan de kerkdeur, de ijzerdraad even vlechten aan het hekken !

En quittant l'église, bien refermer en l'état, pour la porte la cheville dans son orifice, pour le portique il suffira de quelques tours sur le fil de fer!

Leaving the church, we have to close everything again, like it was, the door with the pin, the portal with a few turns of the iron wire!
